Jesus challenges us to set priorities and adjust our focus towards God in Heaven, and his Kingdom. When he told his followers not to worry about tomorrow, he led them by example. He wasn’t constantly looking ahead anxiously, or making the present moment count – only because of what might happen next. Instead, he seems to have had the gift of living totally in the present, giving complete attention to the present task, celebrating the goodness of God here and now. Knowing that his father, God was the one who created it all and is constantly involved in nature and the world. One interpretation recognizes that this passage assures the poor that in God’s sight they are of more value than birds and lilies, whose lives display God’s continuing care. It has been said that: “People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges.” There are many isolated people in our community, in our city, in our state. How do we reach out and offer them bridges instead of fences? Many people experience stress and worries, but don’t even know about God’s compassion. Most people seem to be looking for a place to feel safe, be accepted, to belong and find meaning – but don’t know how to find those things. How can we provide that on Sunday, and also during the week? If we leave behind our own worries and concerns, and instead focus on God and the Kingdom, as Jesus did – then we work towards helping them and being transformed ourselves.
